TRI has been at the forefront of research into textured hair for many years now. From the first publications in the 1980’s, to holding the first Multi-Ethnic Hair Care Symposium in 2019, through to the recent consortium research project completed in 2021. Early publications from TRI on textured hair focussed on hair breakage and started to uncover the unique breakage patterns seen in highly curly hair types, and the effects of chemical treatments on hair strength (Kamath et al., J.Soc.Cosmet.Chem. 1984; Kamath et al., J.Soc.Cosmet.Chem. 1985). More recent reviews have also focussed on why textured hair can be so fragile and easy to break (Evans, Cosmetics & Toiletries Magazine, 2020; Cornwell & Malinauskyte, Cosmetics & Toiletries Magazine, 2020). The team at TRI, together with Croda, have also investigated the effects of protein treatments on breakage in textured hair (Malinauskyte et al., Int.J.Cosmet.Sci. 2020).
In 2019 TRI started a ground-breaking consortium project on textured hair. The $1 million project focused on (i) understanding breakage in textured hair, (ii) understanding scalp problems in textured hair, and (iii) development of new product evaluation methods for textured hair. The project was sponsored by 10 cosmetics companies, each contributing $75,000. TRI Contributed $250,000 from internal resources.
The results from the consortium project have remained exclusive to our sponsors until this year, 2023. Now, we can share our discoveries in a series of keynote presentations at the 3rd Multi-Ethnic Hair and Scalp Care Symposium in June (click here to see the agenda). This year the Symposium will be delivered, for the first time, in a hybrid format. For people wanting to attend in person and to start networking and meeting friends again, we have a full-scale live event, including a Poster & Cocktails Reception on the evening of Day 1. Registrations for the event are priced the same ($400), regardless of whether people attend live or on-line. As usual there are early-bird discounts, free places for member companies, large academic discounts, and large group discounts. Contact us for more detail about these. For people attending the live event there is a Live Attendance Supplement ($250) to off-set venue and food costs over the two days.
