Fundamentals of Hair Science & Claims Course 2024 – Available Now to View at Any Time

The ‘Fundamentals of Hair Science and Claims Course 2024’ is now available as a box set in the TRI Library. The course took place on 24th, 25th and 26th April 2024, and has, until this month, only been available to those who registered for the live event earlier this year.  Now, for the first time, TRI Library users can purchase access to all the presentations and slides from the 2024 course at any time and view them immediately.  Click here to view and purchase the box set.

The fundamentals of hair science and hair claims course is a rite of passage for many people entering the hair category.  The course takes place live each year in New Jersey, usually in April or May.  Live courses take place in a hybrid format, with both in person and on-line attendees, allowing for in-depth question-and-answer sessions with presenters and fun Kahoot! quizzes to test your knowledge.  In person attendees also enjoy networking with TRI staff, touring the TRI laboratories and receiving live demos of equipment.  Live courses are always refreshed each year as the science in this exciting area continues to develop.  

However, for those who need training immediately, we now offer a box set of recordings from the latest edition of the course in the TRI library all year round.  The 2024 course box set contains twelve 60-minute presentations from experts at TRI on: hair structure and biology, hair product science, measurement techniques, and claims substantiation.

This introductory course is designed for undergraduate and postgraduate level cosmetic scientists who need to build their knowledge in hair science and claim substantiation.

You can purchase access to the course at any time.  This will enable you to stream videos of the presentations and download the slides to study for a year.  It costs $250 to purchase access to the course box set, the same price as registration for the live on-line course.  Just go to the box sets section of the TRI Library to purchase your copy through a simple PayPal payment.  This course material is not freely accessible to Library subscribers, or to TRI Member Companies.

TRI Talks 2024 Series – Presentation 2 of 4: Wednesday 6th November, 1pm ET

AN UPDATE ON MEASURING HAIR MOTION

In the second of four talks this season Dr Trefor Evans (Institute Fellow, TRI Princeton) will present a talk titled ‘An Update on Measuring Hair Motion’. TRI Talks take place to simulate scientific discourse and debate in the cosmetics and personal care category and are free to join.  690 scientists from around the world registered to attend last year’s talks. Uniquely for a technical webinar, TRI Talks allow all participants to openly share their views and to ask questions, on microphone and camera, if they so wish.

The Hair Movement Consortium Project took place in 2020-2021. This project investigated how instrumental measurements of hair movement might relate to consumer preferences for different types of movement. It attempted to answer the questions: “what is good movement?”, and “what is natural movement?” In this presentation Dr Trefor Evans will share some the findings from his research work. It is fair to say that there is much more to hair movement than that which first meets the eye.

Vibrational spectroscopy techniques are underestimated by cosmetic and biomedical companies. Indeed, these versatile techniques can be used at different levels from advanced research to marketing and claims substantiation, from ex-vivo experiments to clinical evaluations. Moreover, vibrational spectroscopy imaging is a relevant approach to investigate, compare and visualize the penetration of actives into the different skin layers with a myriad of applications for both cosmetics and biomedical sciences. In this presentation, I highlight the versatility of these techniques by describing different types of applications:

1. Monitoring of the penetration of exogenous substances into the different skin layers as well as their impact on important skin parameters. 

2. Evaluate the impact of environmental conditions (UV, Ozone exposure) on the skin.

3. Evaluate efficacy of future sunscreen products: micro-encapsulation technology, use of film formers to improve the retention of organic UV filters on the skin surface. 

4. Impact of the global warming on the sunscreen penetration.

5. Generation of 3D face mapping to visualize sunscreen protection during clinical evaluation.
