Today, we venture into the science of lipstick testing, unearthing how texture analyzers assess the smoothness and hardness of lipsticks and how the field of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) decrypts the mysteries of their melting behaviors.

Dr. Xuzi Kang's studies have shown that the three-point bending test can measure the effects of damage on hair softness, and open new opportunities for damage repair claims. Her work has also shown that the technique can measure the degree of set delivered by different styling products and their resistance to humidity.

Researchers at TRI, Leila Sorrells, and Dr. Xuzi Kang have developed two, complimentary in vitro methods for testing depilatory products' efficacy and skin-damaging effects. These methods are now available to our clients for performance and claims testing studies.

This study aimed to adapt DSC for the evaluation of nail products. Nails taken from over ten panelists were examined using DSC and a nail Flexer to gain a better understanding of the nail substrate. As proof of principle for product evaluation, the nails were sensitized and treated with nail care actives that exhibited an opposite action. The sensitivity of DSC enabled the prediction of changes in nail structure resulting from repeated product use more rapidly than nail bending fatigue testing, making it a valuable tool for evaluating prototype nail products and supporting claims substantiation.
