It is a common requirement of color cosmetic items to stay in place for an extended duration, with staying-power or durability a key USP. Quantifying a product’s ‘staying power’, or probing the ease of smudging or transfer to other areas, are important considerations during NPD.

Weight transfer is used to assess the ‘staying-power’ of a particular product. During testing, lipsticks are applied to a substrate and then another substrate is pressed onto the original substrate for a specified time under a specified weight. Difference by weight can quantify lipstick transfer, allowing comparison with competitor products, between different formulations and under different conditions.
