Tossing and turning at night can lead to hair breakage and roughened cuticles, neither of which are desirable for consumers. Testing the effects of different fabrics on hair can allow measurement of hair breakage and disorder. Comparison between, for example, pillowcase fabrics is possible without the need for extensive clinical testing.

Reduced friction between a fabric and the hair can be useful for making sure that fabric hair ties slip easily out of the hair, without snagging and damaging it.
